Generally, even those who always complain about the food in the dining hall rave about the Sunday brunch, which is served from 11:30 to 2:30. The food isn't particularly different from any other days, but I think it mostly has to do with the misconception of the hungover students who are famished from the wild weekend.
This Sunday, I enjoyed a casual brunch with two friends in Lowell House, one of 12 upperclassmen dining hall. Each House at Harvard has its own dining hall with own chef. I personally believe Lowell is the worst dining hall because the food is rarely stocked and it's usually cooked with too much oil.
The buffet style format tempts people to indulge too much. The brocoli on the right was way overcooked. Judging from the fullness of the plate, it certainly wasn't on people's top of the to-eat list. On the left is some kind of mushy stew that I didn't try.
The "German pancake" with apples and cinnamon was really, really dry, except for the part right underneath the apple slices. The bread also tasted salty and chalky.
Lyonnaise potato and turkey bacon. I didn't try, but see what I mean by Lowell Dining Hall never refilling the dish? The bacons were flying everywhere haha
Egg polenta and scrambled egg completed the line of brunch entree. The scrambled egg was not fluffy. Well, that is the inevitable fate of mass-produced food.
The hollandaise sauce on top looks too thick.
There is always a salad bar for those who don't like the main entree. I am pleased by the overall freshness of the vegetables.
To the left of the salad bar are yogurt (plain and blueberry), cottage cheese, jello, pudding, hummus, pineapple, and apple sauce. The cottage cheese is the bane of my existence, something that I eat ALL THE TIME. I have missed it while in Korea.
Two types of pasta sauce (usually marinar, pesto, or alfredy), two types of soup, and two types of pasta (whole grain and regular). Two is the magic number at Harvard dining hall. The pasta here are always so dry.
The dessert bar had muffins, cranberry bread, carrot cake, and two flavors of frozen yogurt (vanilla and raspberry). I really wish they would have tart yogurt one of these days...
I loved how the students picked out the muffin top...The supposed "cream cheese" frosting on the carrot cake is the yuckiest frosting ever. The cakes are just really sweet in general.
Rolled oats and steel cut oatmeal and brown rice. Is it really necessary to have two types of oatmeal?
Sandwich bar with some toppings on the right and bagel and cream cheese on the left.
My plate of fresh fruits and yogurt with strawberry toppings. Fresh fruits like these are rare treats in the dining hall. Strawberries are one of my favorite fruits, but I don't like them as much when drenched in sweet sugary sauce. The plain yogurt I got was slightly frozen.
My very hungry friend's dish. Pasta with pesto sauce (which he didn't eat at all because he said it tasted bad), bacon, scrambled eggs, and pancake, half a bagel with cream cheese, and salad.
Another similar presentation.
Veritaffles! (Waffle with the Harvard logo). I used to love the Veritaffle my sophomore year but ever since my stomach began to hurt after eating one, I stopped getting it.
The chefs make eggs cooked to order on Sunday. I got the scrambled egg made with egg whites, tomatoes, onions, and bell pepper.
I asked for no cheese, but the chef accidentally added cheese...lots of it, too. The omelet was also bland and tasteless, so I had to add ton of salt. It ended up just tasting like salt thereafter.
