A little drizzle of rain last Saturday didn’t discourage thousands of fitness aficionados from participating in the annual City Challenge Obstacle Race in Jersey City - and certainly not me, the defending champion. While I wanted to be the first female racer to cross the finish line again and defend my title, my main goal was just to have fun while crawling, scrambling, scaling, and propelling myself to reach new physical heights.
Unlike a marathon where it’s important to save energy and pace yourself, City Challenge Obstacle Race is a relatively short, 5K race where I could sprint the whole distance. While some obstacles that involved pure strength, such as cinder block carry, definitely drained my energy, others like the wall climbs were an opportunity for me to catch my breath.

Although I was 100% focused on the race, I also managed to soak in as much of the breathtaking view of the skylines as I was running the course. Soon enough, I was nearing the end of the race and found out I was the first female to cross the finish line. More so than the joy of winning the race for second year in a row, I was excited about the chance to challenge my athleticism and endurance by going out of the comfort zone. I am already counting down the days until the next City Challenge Race - New York City, here I come!
