Things go awry...from the very beginning before the show begins. The fireplace mantle won't hold up, the cleaning mop is split into two, and the lighting effect shines on the wrong person. Even with the help of a volunteer audience member, the set isn't quite ready. But the show must go on.
Now playing at the Lyceum Theatre on Broadway, The Play That Goes Wrong - the winner of the Olivier Award for Best New Comedy - is the ultimate slapstick that will make you burst out in laughter. There is a play within this play (meta, yes?) - it begins with the director of the "Cornley University Drama Society," played by Mark Evans, who introduces a 1920s murder mystery called The Murder at Haversham Manor. As the title of the play (the actual play, that is) suggests, everything you can imagine goes wrong.
In addition to the literal set fallout, the actors frequently forget their scripts, the leading woman suffers from multiple concussions, and the dead body simply can't stay put. The entire 2-hour-long play is a total riotous comic relief, and audience enthusiasm is highly recommended.
The Broadway production of The Play That Goes Wrong has already received multiple accolades, including a Tony Award for Best Set Design, Broadway.com’s Audience Choice Award for Best Play and the Theater Fans Award Choice Award for Best Play.
The Play That Goes Wrong is co-written by Mischief Theatre company members Henry Lewis, Jonathan Sayer and Henry Shields. It stars an all-star cast of Ashley Bryant, Clifton Duncan, Mark Evans, Jonathan Fielding, Alex Mandell, Amelia McClain, Harrison Unger and Akron Watson. The cast also includes Preston Truman Boyd, Ned Noyes, Ashley Reyes and Katie Sexton.
