This Magic Show In NYC Is Going To Blow Your Mind

Jamie Allan's Amaze traded cheesy tricks for genuine wonder, and I'm still thinking about it.

I didn't know what to expect when I entered the New World Stages theater in NYC to watch Jamie Allan's Amaze magic show. Maybe sawing-people-in-half, a rabbit or two, and some awkward audience participation? What I got instead was something I absolutely wasn't prepared for: a magic show that felt less like a performance and more like a memory I'd somehow forgotten I had.

It completely exceeded my expectations.

The stage is dressed like a bedroom from 1985. Movie posters for Star Wars, E.T., Ghostbusters, and Labyrinth line the walls. There's a Rubik's Cube. There are cassette tapes. If you grew up in the 80s, you'll immediately feel that warm, fuzzy nostalgia kick in. British magician Jamie Allan takes the stage and immediately breaks the fourth wall. This isn't some distant, untouchable showman in a cape. He's vulnerable, charming, and inviting us into his childhood, a time when he first fell in love with magic. The show becomes less about "look what I can do" and more about "let me share this thing I love with you."

Jamie really shines by seamlessly blending classic sleight-of-hand with cutting-edge technology in ways that genuinely surprised me. iPads become portals for impossible illusions. Holograms appear out of nowhere. At one point, he had the entire audience using our phones as part of a trick that I still can't explain (and probably never will). Every illusion felt purposeful, connected to his story. The two-hour show (with one intermission) never dragged. Between the grand illusions, there were moments of genuine humor, beautiful storytelling, and tricks that had me leaning forward in my seat, whispering "wait, WHAT?" to absolutely no one.

Amaze isn't trying to fool you. It's trying to remind you of something you've forgotten: that sense of wide-eyed wonder you had as a kid, when anything felt possible. In our cynical, screen-addicted, nothing-surprises-us-anymore world, that's the real trick. The show has been extended through May 24th at New World Stages (originally scheduled through February), which tells you everything you need to know about how audiences are responding. It broke records in Chicago, conquered London's West End, and now it's casting its spell on New York.

I've seen a lot of shows. Most are fine. Some are great. Very few are transformative. Amaze falls into that rare third category—not because of the spectacle (though there's plenty), but because Jamie Allan understands something fundamental: the real magic isn't in the trick. It's in the moment of wonder that follows.
